NOTE: Mountain Roads will celebrate one last can release on May 2 from 1-5pm
-
Almost three years ago, we had the crazy idea of opening a tiny, cans-to-go-only brewery and began working on it behind the scenes. In March of 2025, we opened Mountain Roads Brewing and started selling cans to the public. We were met with a warm welcome and have sold a lot of beer since then!
We want to thank everyone who has come out to support Mountain Roads Brewing, as well as our friends and family who have helped us along the way. We also want to thank everyone in the industry who has welcomed us, been so kind, and been open to collaboration. It is truly a great community. It has been an awesome experience, and we are very grateful for the opportunity we’ve had.
However, we have decided to close Mountain Roads Brewing. This was not an easy decision to make because not only was this first phase a success, but we have genuinely enjoyed it. This phase was an experiment and a passion project—one we took on to see whether a not-often-tried business model in the brewing industry could work. We couldn’t have asked for much more, as we continue to sell all the beer we can make on our equipment.
The challenge is that we are now at a point where we need to either scale up significantly or move on. We see it as a major uphill battle to grow our current model (direct sales of cans-to-go) enough to make it sustainable for us. There are potential pivots that could be successful—a taproom, for example—but what that would require isn’t compatible with our current personal priorities, especially raising our young family. Because of that, we’re left with the clarity that moving on is the best decision for us.
We don’t see this chapter as ‘tried and failed,’ but rather as ‘tried, learned a ton, succeeded, and chose not to go further.’ It’s a subtle difference, but an important one.
That said, the Mountain Roads story is not completely over. There’s a possibility that you may still occasionally be able to find Mountain Roads beer going forward. Many of you know that the amazing folks at Swiftwater Brewing Co. have allowed us to rent tank space and brew a batch of Green Ambition there (which is currently on tap and available in cans as well). There are still details to work out, but Swiftwater has invited us to continue doing this on an occasional basis. The beer would be sold on tap and in cans directly from Swiftwater, and potentially at a few other select locations. We’d love to keep Mountain Roads Brewing alive in this way, so stay tuned for more details.
